Johannes Steininger is the Linz sculptor and sound artist who makes inflatable “air sculptures” and soft wall works from industrial plastic film. Here you will find our take on his work and where he has shown.
Our take on Johannes Steininger
Steininger builds sculptures from soft PVC film, the material used for inflatable structures, shaped by radio-frequency embossing. Some are inflated; others hang as padded reliefs between sculpture and painting. “Welcome to the plastic age,” reads his statement.
Sound is the other half. He studied acoustics and sound studies in Linz and Berlin, and his statement says the air objects draw attention to “how the sound space and we as listeners and viewers relate to each other”.
He has shown in Austria, Germany and London, including a 2019 solo show of more than 69 objects at the Luftmuseum in Amberg.

- Born in Linz, Austria, in 1977, with a studio at Graben 9 in Linz, according to Donauregion Oberösterreich.
- Studied at the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz (2004 to 2008) and took a master’s at the Berlin University of the Arts’ Institute of Sound Studies.
- Lectured at the Technical University of Berlin’s Institute of Technical Acoustics (2010 to 2011).
- Makes air sculptures, soft sculptures and sound works from industrial PVC film.
