Rachel Whiteread is the London sculptor who casts the empty spaces in and around everyday things, from a hot-water bottle to a house. Here you will find our take on her work, her 2026 London show, and how to buy it.

Our take on Rachel Whiteread

Whiteread casts negative space: the space inside a room, under a chair or around a staircase. Her best-known piece, House (1993), was a cast of the inside of a Victorian terrace house in east London, according to Gagosian. It was demolished in 1994.

She won the Turner Prize in 1993, the year of House. Her Holocaust Memorial on Vienna’s Judenplatz was installed in 2000.

Her 2026 show at Gagosian in London, Substitute, paired papier-mâché, silver leaf and resin sculptures with photographs.
