Andrew Torr is the London painter behind quiet, prize-winning paintings of housing estates, the Thames and south London commons at night. Here you will find our take on his work, where Andrew Torr has shown, how to buy his paintings, and his two McCartney-themed panels in this year’s War Child auction.
Our take on Andrew Torr
Torr paints the places most painters skip: post-war housing estates, riverbanks and suburban streets, often at dusk. He won the 2024 Jackson’s Art Prize with Estate, a square canvas of white eaves and windowsills. For him the rhythm of the buildings is the point. “The subject matter is almost incidental; it’s a way of discovering what paint can do,” he told Jackson’s.
His two War Child lots both nod to Paul McCartney. Forthlin Road Liverpool is a row of red-brick council terraces under a pale grey sky, with dark hedges and an empty road in the foreground. McCartney grew up at 20 Forthlin Road, now run by the National Trust. The Musician’s House moves inside: a warm, yellow-lit hallway with a carpeted staircase, a patterned runner and a glass pendant lamp.
They are small, but Forthlin Road Liverpool is a classic Torr estate scene, tied neatly to this year’s McCartney brief. His recent originals at Well Hung in Hoxton were priced from £750 to £4,200 and are all marked sold, so a charity lot is a fair way to own one.
