Last updated: 26 October 2026

This Chiharu Shiota edition is a traditional Japanese woodcut, or ukiyo-e, of her red thread drawings. The Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints made it in 2023 on handmade washi paper, in an edition of 120 with a certificate of authenticity. The Southbank Centre Shop sells it for £3,000 unframed. What the Chiharu Shiota edition is

Chiharu Shiota is a Japanese artist, born in Osaka in 1972, who lives and works in Berlin. She is known for room-sized installations of red and black thread, and she represented Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015.

For this print, her red lines are carved into wooden blocks and printed by hand. The Southbank Centre sold it alongside her Hayward Gallery show, Threads of Life, which ran from 17 February to 3 May 2026. Our Chiharu Shiota and Yin Xiuzhen Hayward Gallery review covers the exhibition itself.

Who it suits

  • People who saw Threads of Life: it is the same red line work, in a form you can hang at home.
  • Collectors of Japanese printmaking: it is made the traditional way, by a specialist woodcut studio.
  • Anyone buying a significant gift: it is numbered and comes with a certificate.

The limits

At £3,000 it is a large purchase, and the price is for the print alone. Framing is extra.

Delivery can take up to 10 weeks, so it won't arrive in time for a gift next week. In addition, only a handful of numbers were left on 26 October 2026, so the one you want may go.

A print is an artwork rather than an investment with a promised return. Its value can fall as well as rise, so buy it because you want it on your wall.
