Big Man by Dean Atta

Last updated: 14 October 2026

Big Man by Dean Atta is his first novel for adults. Cipher Press published it in paperback on 3 September 2026 at £12.99. It follows Big, a middle-aged Black British gay man living in East London with his boyfriend Little. Then Mother returns: the African American trans woman whose house sheltered him in the club scene decades earlier. Atta wrote The Black Flamingo, which took the Stonewall Book Award in 2020, and this is his first book for grown-ups in prose rather than verse. It runs to 304 pages, ISBN 9781917008259. I checked the prices below on 13 October 2026.

What the novel is about

Big and Little live quietly. They go out with friends and take group holidays. They do yoga at home, then run side by side along the Hackney canals. Atta gives that ordinary domestic life a lot of room before he disturbs it. That is unusual in a novel about queer trauma, and it is why the disturbance lands.

Big came of age in the club scene under Mother. She was an African American trans woman who built a name in London and turned her house into a refuge for young queer people. Then Big learns she is publishing a memoir. The two reconnect after decades apart, and he has to face an assault he has spent his adult life not thinking about. Cipher Press calls the result tender and daring, and full of gentle humour. That is fair: the book is funny far more often than the plot suggests.

So the subject matter is heavy in places. It covers sexual assault, ageing and family estrangement. Anyone after a light read should know that going in.

Atta's first book for adults

Dean Atta built his reputation on young adult fiction in verse. The Black Flamingo came out in 2020 and sold to the United States in a five-way auction. It took the Stonewall Book Award and the Carnegie Shadowers' Choice Award. Four more shortlists followed: the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, the CILIP Carnegie Medal, the Jhalak Prize and the YA Book Prize. Then came Only on the Weekends. He also co-wrote the short film Two Black Boys in Paradise.

Big Man by Dean Atta breaks from all of that in two directions at once. It is prose rather than verse. It also speaks to adults rather than teenagers, through a middle-aged narrator instead of a coming-of-age one. The Black Flamingo covers becoming yourself. This covers what happens to that self thirty years later, which is a far less crowded shelf.

Cipher Press, the publisher

Cipher Press is a small independent London publisher working almost entirely in queer fiction and non-fiction. It acquired Big Man as Atta's adult debut. That matters commercially, because a first adult novel from a well-known YA author would normally go to a large house. This one did not.

For a reader that means print run rather than prestige. Independent runs are smaller, so a title that finds an audience can sell out at the publisher while the chains still have stock. Cipher sells direct from its own shop, and that route puts the most money back into the press.

Harry Lighton, who wrote and directed Pillion, calls the novel "Original and beautifully written" on Cipher's own listing.

One correction, because it will confuse anyone who checks. Amazon's product details give the print length as 1 page, which is a data error rather than a format. Waterstones and Bookshop.org both say 304. The dimensions and the 294g weight fit a novel that length, and the publisher prints no page count at all. So 304 is the figure to trust.

Where to buy it, and what it costs

Amazon UK£11.45In stock and shipped by Amazon. The audiobook is £7.49

Amazon undercuts Bookshop.org by £0.89, and the RRP by £1.54. So if price is the only thing you care about, that is the answer. But Bookshop.org splits its margin with independent bookshops, and Cipher Press keeps the most of the four. The cheapest option and the most useful one differ here. I have said what each costs and left the choice alone.

How Big Man by Dean Atta sits next to his other two books here

CoolCuration already carries two Atta titles, and this deliberately does not repeat them.

The Black Flamingo is the novel in verse that made his name. Written for teenagers, it follows a mixed Greek Cypriot and Jamaican boy finding drag at university. I Can't Even Think Straight is the queer coming-of-age collection. Both cover arriving.

Big Man sits at the opposite end of a life. Its narrator is middle-aged, settled and in a long relationship, and the crisis arrives from behind him rather than ahead. So if somebody has read the other two and wondered what Atta does next, the honest answer is that he grew the reader up with him.

Who it suits

It suits readers of literary fiction who want a queer novel other than a coming-out story. It suits anyone who liked the warmth of The Black Flamingo but has aged out of its narrator. The gentle humour is real, and it carries a lot of the book.

Despite Atta's back catalogue, this is not a young adult novel, so do not give it as one. Atta handles the assault at the centre of it seriously rather than gratuitously. It is still there, though, and a reader who needs to avoid that subject should choose something else.
