Green and black cover of Human Geography by Simon Armitage, Poet Laureate, in the Faber signed edition

Human Geography by Simon Armitage: the Signed 40th Anniversary Pamphlet

Last updated: 29 September 2026

Human Geography is where Simon Armitage started. He was 23 when Smith/Doorstop Books in Huddersfield published it as his first poetry pamphlet in 1986. Forty years on, Faber has reissued Human Geography by Simon Armitage as a signed paperback, with a new introduction and one new poem. Every copy is signed by Armitage, who has been Poet Laureate since 2019, and it costs £8. Salts Mill Shop in Saltaire and Faber both had it in stock on 29 September 2026.

What the Human Geography reissue is

It is a slim paperback pamphlet, and every copy is signed by Armitage. Faber published it on 4 June 2026 and sells it as a signed limited edition. Neither Faber nor Salts Mill gives a print run. The ISBN is 9780571405787, so quote that number if you order it anywhere else.

The cover keeps the look of the 1986 original, with navy bands across a green cover. Armitage calls that colour "the cow-cud green of the cover", and it was one of the things he kept.

The 1986 pamphlet it reproduces

Human Geography came out in 1986 from Smith/Doorstop Books, a small press in Huddersfield. His editor there was Peter Sansom. Armitage was 23, and Faber's listing quotes him describing that time as one "when I felt like a nobody but could dream about being anybody".

He announced the reissue on Instagram in May 2026, and Salts Mill reprints his post on its product page. In it he thanks Sansom, his "editor, teacher and friend", for backing the Faber edition. He also explains the corrections. As he puts it, "word processing hadn't really arrived in West Yorkshire in 1986", so the first printing had typos and odd punctuation.

What is new in the Faber edition

  • The introduction: a new retrospective piece by Armitage looking back at where the poems came from.
  • The corrections: the 1986 typos are fixed, and he has changed one or two phrases.
  • Painting The Lighthouse: one new poem, which he describes as being about "the excitement and insanity of wanting to become a poet".
  • The signature: every copy is signed by Armitage himself.

Otherwise, Armitage calls it "a fairly faithful reproduction" of the pamphlet he published at 23.

Simon Armitage, from Huddersfield to Poet Laureate

Armitage was appointed Poet Laureate in May 2019. He was born in West Yorkshire and is Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds. Faber publishes his poetry, including Magnetic Field, Blossomise and his translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Human Geography comes before all of those books. For a reader who already owns them, this is the chance to read the poems he wrote first, in a signed copy.

Salts Mill, where we found it

Salts Mill is the former textile mill in Saltaire, near Bradford, that Sir Titus Salt opened in 1853. Saltaire became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Today the mill holds a large bookshop, known in particular for its poetry shelves. It also has the 1853 Gallery, which shows a large number of David Hockney's paintings, etchings and drawings. Entry and parking are free.

Only part of the mill's stock is online, including its signed and collectable books. For UK buyers, postage is worked out at checkout by parcel size and starts at £2.50. Alternatively, you can collect in person. If you like the Hockney connection, our page on the David Hockney tray from the Serpentine shop covers a £40 tray printed with one of his 2025 paintings.

Where to buy it in the UK

Both shops below charge £8 for the same signed Faber pamphlet. Salts Mill postage starts at £2.50. Faber charges £3 for standard UK delivery, and delivery is free on Faber orders over £35.

Why it works as a gift

  • The signature: a copy signed by the sitting Poet Laureate for £8.
  • The story: it is his first ever collection, so it suits anyone who already reads him.
  • The price: £8, which keeps it well under £25 even with postage.

More presents at this price are in our gifts for £25 and under guide.
