Amalia Pica is the Argentine-born, London-based artist who makes work about communication and taking part, from rubber-stamped paperwork to daisy chains made by hundreds of people. Here you will find our take on her work, where Amalia Pica is on show now, the one edition you can buy in the UK, and our review of her 2026 Herald St show.

Our take on Amalia Pica

Pica was born in Argentina during the dictatorship and worked as a primary school teacher before she called herself an artist. “I think it took me a really long time to call myself an artist,” she told Studio International in 2025. Her work keeps returning to how people signal to each other: semaphore flags, Venn diagrams, office stamps, and lately daisy chains.

The daisy chains are made with other people. At Cample Line in Dumfriesshire, staff, visitors and local schoolchildren made a 50-metre chain with her. “I think of the daisy chain as a collective sculpture,” she said, adding: “These ideas don’t come together unless you have this level of participation.”

I gave Daisy Chain at Herald St 2/5. The paintings were lovely to look at but felt more illustrative than exploratory: pretty, yes, memorable, not quite. Her participatory work makes the stronger case for her, and Amalia Pica editions are rare in the UK, so the House of Voltaire risograph below is the easy way in. Her auction market is small, with five lots ever listed in Artnet’s price database.
