R.I.P. Germain is the Luton-born artist whose photographs, films, performances and installations look at Black experience, history and culture. Here you will find our take on his work, where he has shown, the ICA lithograph you can buy for £100, and the edition we feature.
Our take on R.I.P. Germain
Germain works across photography, performance, essays, video, sound and objects, and his installations are deliberately crowded. “I’m a maximalist, so my installations usually have multiple, complicated components,” he told AnOther in 2022. “Storytelling is the context for the work I make.”
He won the ICA’s Image Behaviour award in 2021, which led to his first short film, mew, and then to a solo show at the ICA in 2023. Time Out named him in its Future of London Art series the same year.
The best way to own an R.I.P. Germain right now is the ICA’s A1 lithograph, Cracky Blackz’s Genie, at £100. Sales help fund the ICA.
