Jackson Pollock is the American painter whose poured and dripped paintings changed what a painting could be. Here you will find our take on his work, where to see it in the UK and his house on Long Island.
Our take on Jackson Pollock
Pollock laid his canvases on the floor and poured and dripped paint across them, building dense webs of line. Tate holds works from across his career, from Naked Man with Knife (c.1938–40) to Summertime: Number 9A (1948) and Yellow Islands (1952).
He made the poured paintings at his house and studio in The Springs, on Long Island, which he shared with the painter Lee Krasner. The Pollock-Krasner House is now a National Historic Landmark open for tours.
He died in 1956, aged 44. His paintings are among the most expensive in the world, so for most people the way in is a museum visit.
