Nick Grindrod is the Sheffield abstract artist who layers hard-edged geometric shapes, stripes and bright colour over scuffed, worn-back surfaces. Here you will find our take on his work, his upcoming solo show, the Nick Grindrod prints you can buy, and his two small paintings in this year’s War Child auction.
Our take on Nick Grindrod
Grindrod paints bold abstract pictures, but they are rooted in a real place. He describes his home city, Sheffield, as “a place where the decay and weathering effects of time have created a faded history of both the human and natural world environments,” in a Jonathan LeVine Projects press release. So the bright, flat shapes sit on sanded, scratched and distressed grounds, and taking paint away matters as much as putting it on.
He has two acrylics in the War Child sale, and I read both titles as nods to the Beatles. The Walrus has a teal ground with grey and white marbled bands swirling through it in an S shape. Pink, black, orange and crimson curves crowd the middle, while rows of thin multicoloured stripes run across the top and bottom like piano keys. Northern Song is lighter: a big red zigzag on a pale grey ground, a yellow circle ringed in pink, black and white arcs, and a scatter of coloured dots, with white drips down the lower edge.
He is also a good bet for anyone who wants more than one piece. He sells signed limited edition prints from his own website, and he runs The Shop, a small gallery on Abbeydale Road in Sheffield. His working rules, he told RMC Media in July 2026, are “to listen to my gut, always work with integrity, and roll with the punches.”
