Phox V2 water filter jug, a sustainable Brita alternative for a new kitchen

Phox Water Filter - from £25

Last updated: 30 March 2026

The Phox water filter is the UK's first refillable water filter cartridge, designed and manufactured in Glasgow. Instead of binning an entire cartridge every month, you swap the granules and keep the housing. It's cheaper per litre than Brita, generates far less plastic waste, and the refill packs fit through your letterbox. Over 10,800 Trustpilot reviews with a 4.6/5 rating.

What makes Phox different

Phox Water was founded in Glasgow in 2019 to tackle a specific problem: the millions of disposable water filter cartridges that end up in UK landfill every year. Their solution is a refillable cartridge. Instead of throwing the whole thing away, you open it up, tip out the spent granules, pour in fresh ones from a compostable sachet, and carry on. One refill lasts up to 45 days or 200 litres.

The company currently offers two jugs. The Wave is a 2.8-litre BPA-free plastic jug that fits most fridge doors, starting at around £25 with a three-month filter pack. The V2 is a 2.2-litre glass jug at roughly £40, which looks sharp on a kitchen counter. Both use the same cartridge system. If you already own a Brita jug, Phox also sells a Maxtra-compatible refillable cartridge so you can switch without buying new hardware.

Key features

Refillable cartridges: Replace the granules, not the plastic. Dramatically cuts waste compared to traditional filters.

Three filter blends: Clean (hard water and limescale), Alkaline (adds magnesium and raises pH), and a Maxtra-compatible option for existing Brita jugs.

Letterbox-friendly refills: Sachets arrive through your door on a subscription you can cancel any time. A three-month supply costs around £14.

Made in Scotland: Manufacturing, packaging, design and distribution all happen within 30 miles of the Glasgow HQ.

Lower running costs: Roughly £0.035 per litre versus around £0.042 for Brita Maxtra, based on current UK pricing.

Trustpilot rated: 4.6 out of 5 from over 10,800 verified reviews. You can read user feedback on the Phox Water Trustpilot page.

Who is the Phox water filter best for?

Phox suits anyone who wants filtered water without the plastic guilt. It's particularly good for households in hard-water areas (most of London, the South East, and the Midlands), people who want a subscription that removes the hassle of reordering, and anyone looking for a genuinely eco-conscious alternative to Brita. The glass V2 jug also makes a thoughtful new-home or housewarming gift.

We've used the Clean filter in London for six months and the results have been excellent. You can read our full write-up in our Phox water filter review.

In our experience, yes. The refillable cartridge produces less plastic waste and the per-litre running cost is lower (roughly £0.035 vs £0.042 for Brita Maxtra). Phox also offers a Maxtra-compatible cartridge, so you can try the system without buying a new jug.

How often do Phox filters need replacing?

Every 45 days or 200 litres. The Phox app sends a notification when it's time. Subscription refill packs arrive before you run out.

Can I use Phox refills in my Brita jug?

Yes. Phox sells a refillable Maxtra-compatible cartridge that fits standard Brita jugs. You keep your existing jug and switch to Phox's granule refill system.

Everything is designed, manufactured and packed in Glasgow, Scotland.
