On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is Ocean Vuong's first novel, written as a letter from a young Vietnamese American man to his mother, who cannot read it. Vuong had already won the T. S. Eliot Prize for his poetry, and the novel became a Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller. Vintage publishes the UK paperback at 256 pages with an RRP of £9.99. The narrator, nicknamed Little Dog, writes to his mother Rose in his late twenties. He grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, with her and his grandmother Lan, after the family left Vietnam. The letter goes back before he was born, through the war and what it did to both women, then forward through his own childhood.
At the centre is his teenage relationship with Trevor, a boy he meets working on a tobacco farm. The book also deals with poverty, violence at home and addiction. Vuong writes it in short, fragmented sections, so it reads in places like a long poem.
Vuong was born in Ho Chi Minh City in 1988 and grew up in Hartford. His first poetry collection, Night Sky with Exit Wounds, won the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2017. He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2019, the year the novel came out in the US. His second novel, The Emperor of Gladness, followed in May 2025.
The novelist Celeste Ng called the book "luminous, shattering, urgent, necessary", a line printed on Penguin's page for the UK edition. The Washington Post named it one of its ten best books of 2019.
The fragmented structure and lyrical style do not suit everyone. Readers who want a clear, linear plot may find it hard going. The book also describes violence, drug use and sex directly, so check it before giving it to a younger reader. For a queer coming-of-age story told in a more direct way, see our page on I Can't Even Think Straight by Dean Atta.
