What Buy Me Once is

Tara Button started Buy Me Once after her sister gave her a Le Creuset pot for her 30th birthday. At the time she was writing TV adverts. She wondered why nothing else she owned was built to last as long as that pot, and began researching warranties and building a basic website in her spare time.

In January 2016 a journalist found the site and wrote it up for The Telegraph. The article went viral, so Button quit her job to run the shop full time. She has since written a book on the idea, A Life Less Throwaway.

What Buy Me Once sells

The range covers kitchen, home, clothing and travel. The brands with the most listings are Darn Tough merino socks, Wingback leather goods, Dip & Doze bedding and Stellar kitchen tools. Solidteknics pans, Dualit toasters and Elephant Box steel lunchboxes are also on the shelves. Each colour has its own listing, so the number of distinct products is lower than 646.

Delivery and returns

Buy Me Once works with independent makers, so an order with products from two brands can arrive in two parcels. Some items ship straight from the maker. Because of that, you need to contact Buy Me Once before returning anything, and it will tell you where to send it. Underwear and some made-to-order products have return restrictions, which are shown on each product page.

The 30-day return window is separate from any guarantee on the product itself. A lifetime guarantee is normally honoured by the maker, not by the shop. The delivery page has the full charges, including the over-18 signature needed for knives.

The Lifetime Lovers Club points scheme

Buy Me Once also runs a points scheme, the Lifetime Lovers Club. You earn points on orders, plus 250 for opening an account, 500 on your birthday and between 100 and 500 for leaving a review. Points are worth £1 per 100 when you spend them, in steps of 500 (£5), 1,000 (£10) or 1,500 (£15). The rewards page has the full list.

On a first order, the £10 referral coupon saves more than the points, because the 250 you get for opening an account are not enough to spend. The points help on later orders.
