About Artist support pledge
The ARTIST SUPPORT PLEDGE is a culture and economy in support of artists and was the brainchild of artist Matthew Burrows. As a result throughout the pandemic, it has grown globally and become a lifeline to many artists.
The project is simple. Artists post images and share their work on Instagram with a maximum price of £200 and add the #artistsupportpledege hashtag. And if someone is interested in buying a work they simply message the artist and arrange payment. Once an artist reaches £1000 in sales they should then buy the work of another artist from the pledge. By being so simple artists are creating a mini art economy, spreading the love and spreading the profits.
As a result of the pledge, we all have a very exciting opportunity to acquire works by established and emerging artists from all over the world. And because of the pledge, they're all at an affordable price. Because the pledge has taken off so well there's a lot of artists and works to try and look through. So to help you out we've done some of the leg work and have created a curated list of stand out artists that we've noticed who are taking part.
Our COOLCURATION artist support pledge top picks:
Below you can find some of the U.K. artists profiles we at COOLCURATION have come across (and like). Check them out below to see their latest and greatest. And if you think we've missed someone our comment boxes are always open for your suggestions.
Artist pledge top pick 1: Daniel Pettitt
First up: London based Pettitt graduated from the RCA in 2017 and has had his work exhibited from London to Milan. His works are a mix of dense compositions and ebullient colour palettes that is sure to be a talking point in any home.
Artist Support pledge top pick 2: Bernadette Kerrigan
Secondly: Bernadette works from the midlands. Also, a graduate of the RCA she's painted everything from cats to blankets and been bought by many a collector. We had the pleasure of seeing her recent exhibition at PALFREY in London where her and Hughes (below) blew our fragile little minds with The Lie-by for instance.
Artist pledge top pick 3: Richard Hughes
Thirdly: Hughes is a well-renowned artist, exhibited often by Anton Kern gallery new york. His work spans a unique physicality of object playing with orientation and space. Hughes’s works are high-fi takes on low-fi. These reformed overlooked objects are combined with a level of meticulous detail that's rarely parallelled. And that's what makes his works so interesting. We've always loved his t-shirt works and we're really happy to see him taking part in the Artists Support Pledge.
Artist Support pledge top pick 4: Andrea Medjesi Jones
Fourth up: Medjesi-Jones paintings and drawings are somewhere between figurative and abstract. Her works focus on the nature of the image in relation to the process of making. Through her works, she applies collage fragmentation, restructuring and geometric patterning. And by doing this creates truly beautiful works that would be a lovely addition to any collection.
Artist Support pledge top pick 5: Edward Kay
And last, but by no means least in our list: Kay. He graduated from the RA in 2005 and now regularly shows with Rob Tufnell Gallery in London and Cologne. Kay's academically inspired paintings range in their subjects from ridiculous cartoons and stoner culture to heraldic emblems and seventeenth-century society portraits. We particularly love the pickle motif he uses from time to time.
