Andy Warhol is the Pittsburgh-born artist who turned soup cans, celebrities and car crashes into Pop Art. Here you will find our take on his work, where to see it in the UK, and what you can buy.

Our take on Andy Warhol

Warhol started as one of New York’s most successful commercial illustrators in the 1950s, then moved into fine art in the early 1960s. His Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962) “created a buzz in the art world that launched Warhol as a celebrity”, according to The Andy Warhol Museum.

He worked from photographs and source images for the rest of his life, through celebrity portraits, the “death and disaster” paintings, films such as Sleep (1963) and Empire (1964), and Interview magazine. He asked to be taken at face value: “If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There’s nothing behind it.”

Tate holds around 290 of his works. Its 2020 Tate Modern retrospective book is still on sale at £25.
