Edward Hopper (1882 to 1967) was the American painter of lonely diners, offices and empty streets. Here you will find our take on his work, the Hopper show on now in Pisa and the Whitney’s Hopper book.

Our take on Edward Hopper

Hopper was born in Nyack, New York, on 22 July 1882 and died on 15 May 1967. He lived and worked in his Washington Square apartment in New York from 1913 until his death, according to the Whitney.

He sketched on the spot, working “from the fact”, as the Whitney puts it, before painting in the studio. His wife, the artist Jo Nivison, whom he married in 1924, was his only model.

The Whitney holds 3,151 of his works, and lends more than 150 of them to Edward Hopper: New York and Beyond in Pisa until March 2027.
