Fletcher Sibthorp is the London figurative artist known for dancers, flamenco and, lately, lone figures glimpsed through windows. Here you will find our take on his work, where to see Fletcher Sibthorp now, the limited edition prints and originals you can buy from him, and his small painting in this year’s War Child auction.
Our take on Fletcher Sibthorp
Sibthorp made his name painting movement, from Royal Ballet principals to flamenco dancers. His recent Windows series is quieter: single figures seen through the glass of mid-century buildings, lit like a film still. He cites Vilhelm Hammershøi and Hitchcock’s Rear Window as influences. “I’m fascinated by the figure and placing them in an abstract space and from these simple elements create a narrative,” he says on his own site.
His War Child piece, Sun Falling, is a small oil and mixed media panel from that world. A grey modernist facade fills the frame, with a grid of windows and a strip of orange brick. In the centre, one window glows white and gold, and a blurred figure stands in it. Gold and cream specks spray outwards across the wall, as if the light itself is breaking up.
That broken surface is deliberate. He paints a scene classically, then breaks it down and rebuilds it, a process he calls Entropy on his about page. His own shop also sells prints of the Windows paintings from £85, so this auction lot is a chance at a real one for not much more.
