Gill Rocca is the British artist who paints imagined, empty landscapes in thin glazes of oil, often on small birch ply panels and round tondos. Here you will find our take on her work, where to see Gill Rocca now, how to buy one of her paintings, and her two small oils in this year’s War Child auction.

Our take on Gill Rocca

Rocca paints places that do not quite exist. Her landscapes are dusky and quiet, with a low sun, a moon or a line of trees, and never a person in sight. She builds them slowly in thin oil glazes over sanded gesso. “The landscapes I explore in my paintings are always uninhabited, solitary spaces, often familiar yet otherworldly,” she writes on her own site.

She has two pieces in the War Child sale, both oil on ply panel. Falling is a wide view of heavy grey cloud, with a small pale yellow sun just above a dark band of trees. Falling II turns the same idea upright. Here the sun is a deep orange disc, low in a smoky sky over a faint treeline. Together they read like two moments of the same dusk.

Her small panels have a following. She has shown in Flowers Gallery’s Small Is Beautiful every year since 2019, and both War Child lots had bids by 28 October. In addition, she has given paintings to charity sales for the National Brain Appeal and the Woodland Trust, so this is familiar ground for her.
