Apollo 11 Haynes Owners' Workshop Manual

Last updated: 2 October 2026

The Apollo 11 Haynes manual takes the format Haynes made famous with car repair books and applies it to the first Moon landing. Christopher Riley and Philip Dolling go through the Saturn V rocket, the Command and Service Modules and the Lunar Module in 216 illustrated pages. Haynes published this 50th anniversary hardback in April 2019, and it was £22.99 on Amazon UK on 2 October 2026.

What the Apollo 11 Haynes manual covers

The book's full title is NASA Mission AS-506 Apollo 11 Owners' Workshop Manual. AS-506 was the Saturn V that launched the mission. The subtitle then lists the other hardware by its NASA codes: Command Module CM-107, Service Module SM-107 and Lunar Module LM-5.

It starts with the design of the Saturn V and then works through each spacecraft in turn. After that it covers the spacesuits, the life support systems and the communications kit. The later chapters follow the mission itself, from launch procedures and the techniques for walking on the Moon to re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.

The mission it documents

Apollo 11 launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 16 July 1969. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Lunar Module Eagle on 20 July and spent about 22 hours on the surface. Meanwhile Michael Collins stayed in orbit in the Command Module Columbia. The crew splashed down on 24 July, eight days after launch.

NASA keeps a full Apollo 11 mission page with the timeline, crew biographies and photographs. So it is a good place to read alongside the cutaway drawings in the manual.

  • Space fans: the cutaways and diagrams cover the engineering of each spacecraft as well as the mission itself.
  • Haynes owners: anyone who has a Haynes manual for their car in the garage will know the layout straight away.
  • Model builders: it shows what each part of the real hardware did, so it goes well with a LEGO Saturn V or a Lunar Module kit.
