Out of the Shadows is a book by Walt Odets, a clinical psychologist who has worked with gay men for more than three decades. It looks at why so many gay men still carry shame from childhood, what the AIDS years left behind, and how to build a life on your own terms rather than on a label handed to you.

What the Out of the Shadows book is about
Odets builds the book from the stories of men he has seen in therapy, alongside his own relationships with other gay men. There is a 74-year-old who only felt able to come out after his wife died. There is a boy from a strict religious family who worked his way to San Francisco, and a middle-aged defence lawyer who left his old life behind.
His main target is the old idea of "the homosexual" as a type of person, defined from outside and then handed back to gay men as an identity. He argues it narrows how men see themselves and their relationships. Instead, he wants men to work out what they actually want and build their lives from that.
It is also partly a memoir. The final chapters are about Odets's own life and the men he has loved, and one Amazon UK reviewer called them some of the most beautiful writing about love they had read.

Who wrote it
Walt Odets is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Berkeley, California. His first book, In the Shadow of the Epidemic: Being HIV-Negative in the Age of AIDS, came out from Duke University Press in 1995. The New York Times named it one of its Notable Books of the Year. He is also the son of the playwright Clifford Odets.
The Observer called Out of the Shadows "the best manifesto on which to build a platform of queer love and self-acceptance". Who it suits
It suits gay men who want to understand why some things still feel hard, years after coming out. It also works for partners, friends and family who want a serious account rather than an introduction.
It is not a quick read, though. Odets writes like a psychotherapist, and the chapters on the epidemic are heavy going. One UK reviewer read it slowly, ten minutes reading and thirty thinking it over. The UK paperback is from Penguin, published on 7 May 2020, ISBN 9780141990149. It is a standard paperback size, 198 by 129mm, and weighs about the same as a 250g pack of butter. The UK subtitle is The Psychology of Gay Men's Lives. The American edition, from Farrar, Straus and Giroux, has the subtitle Reimagining Gay Men's Lives, but the text inside is the same.
