What is in the Amazing Origami Kit

The kit comes in a square box, 19cm along each side. Inside are 144 sheets of origami paper, each 6.75 inches (about 17cm) square, and a full-colour booklet with step-by-step diagrams. You need nothing else: no glue, no scissors and no tape.

The 17 projects include a luna moth, a tortoise, a carp, a peacock, a butterfly, a magnolia blossom, an inflated frog, a water bomb balloon and a Chinese zodiac wheel. Tuttle wrote the instructions for every skill level, so a beginner can start folding straight away.

Tuttle, the publisher, also puts printable PDF sheets of the kit's paper designs on its website, so you can print more patterned paper when the box runs low.

Who the Amazing Origami Kit suits

  • Beginners: the booklet has a diagram for every step of each model.
  • Children aged about nine and over: younger children will need an adult to help with the harder folds. Our gift guide for kids has more ideas.
  • Anyone who likes Japanese design: the kimono-style papers are part of the appeal. Our gift guide for Japan lovers has more presents in the same vein.

The limits

144 sheets works out at about eight per project, and practice attempts use paper up quickly. Once the patterned paper runs out, you can print Tuttle's PDF sheets or buy plain origami paper separately.

The booklet uses diagrams rather than photographs, and some people find diagram notation hard to follow at first. If a fold will not make sense, searching for a video of the same model usually helps.

This is a US edition priced in dollars by the publisher ($18.95), so the UK price on Amazon can move with stock and exchange rates.

If origami leads to an interest in Japanese aesthetics more widely, Wabi-Sabi by Leonard Koren is a book on the idea behind much Japanese design.
