The Blackhorse Lane lambswool hat is a £45 ribbed beanie from the Walthamstow jeans maker, and every stage of it happens in Britain. The yarn is spun and dyed by Z. Hinchliffe & Sons, a Yorkshire spinner going since 1766, and Robert Mackie of Scotland knits it in an Ayrshire town once known for its bonnets. It is 100% lambswool, seamless and one size. On 5 October 2026 Buy Me Once had it in Navy, Ecru and Light Grey. Blackhorse Lane had Grey, Red, Navy and Ecru, also at £45.
It is a plain ribbed knit hat, the shape most people mean when they say beanie. Blackhorse Lane calls it the SE10. The rib is soft and springy. You can pull it down over your ears or wear it shorter with the cuff turned up. There are no seams, so nothing presses a ridge into the back of your head. The Blackhorse Lane label sits on the inside rather than on the front.
The reason to buy this one is the supply chain. This hat is spun and dyed in Yorkshire and knitted in Scotland. The two firms that do that work were founded in 1766 and 1845.
The yarn. Z. Hinchliffe & Sons has spun yarn at Hartcliffe Mills in Denby Dale, near Huddersfield, since 1766. British Wool lists it as a supplier and notes that it is still in the same village it started in. It spins and dyes the lambswool for this hat.
The knitting. Robert Mackie of Scotland was founded in 1845 and knits hats, scarves and gloves at Holm Mill in Stewarton, Ayrshire. Stewarton was once called the Bonnet Toun because so much Scottish headwear was made there. Mackie made Glengarry and Balmoral bonnets in the town. Also, according to Mackie's own account, the knitting, washing and finishing all still happen on site, and the company now owns the mill building, which it bought from the Mackie family.
The brand. Blackhorse Lane Ateliers was founded in 2016 by Han Ates in Walthamstow, East London, and makes selvedge and organic denim jeans in its E17 workshop. It also has shops at Coal Drops Yard in King's Cross and on Berwick Street in Soho. On the company's about page, Ates describes the business this way: "We are the salmon swimming against the current in the fashion world."
The two shops stock different colours, so check which one has the colour you want. Both charged the same price when we checked.
| Shop | Price | In stock | Delivered price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy Me Once | £45 | Navy, Ecru, Light Grey | £49.45, with £4.45 UK delivery on orders under £75 |
| Blackhorse Lane | £45 | Grey, Red, Navy, Ecru | £54, with £9 UK delivery on orders under £50 |
On a hat bought by itself, Buy Me Once works out £4.55 cheaper. However, Blackhorse Lane is the only place selling the Red. Its delivery is free over £50, so adding a £16.50 pair of its merino socks costs only £7.50 more than the hat alone. Buy Me Once also lists Orange, Racing Green and Honey, but all three were sold out when we checked.

Neither shop publishes a head circumference or a weight, so if you have a particularly large head, buy from a shop whose returns you are happy with. Follow the care label. Lambswool shrinks and felts in a hot wash or a tumble dryer, so a hat that goes in with the towels will come out a size smaller.
Buy Me Once takes most items back within 30 days of delivery if they are unused and in their original packaging. You need to contact it before posting anything, and you pay the return postage unless the hat is faulty. Blackhorse Lane also offers 30 days to return or exchange.
Blackhorse Lane is known for free repairs on its jeans, but that promise covers its denim only. Nothing on either shop's page extends it to the hat, so treat this as an ordinary purchase with a 30-day return window.
The closest thing on CoolCuration is the Quinton & Chadwick Graph Scarf, which is also lambswool spun in Yorkshire and knitted in Scotland. At £80 it costs nearly twice as much, and it is a statement piece in bright colours. The hat is the quieter purchase: plain colours and a familiar shape. Bought together, they come to £125 for a hat and scarf with the same made-in-Britain story.
