The Elephant Box was the first product from Elephant Box, the company Joy and Liz started in 2015 after Joy struggled to find a lunchbox for her three sons that was not plastic. The idea came from the stainless steel tiffins Joy saw on trips to India, and the first boxes were funded by a crowdfunder.
It is a simple rectangular tin with two clips on the lid. There are no seals, dividers or plastic parts, so there is nothing to crack, stain or hold smells. Elephant Box calls it its bestselling lunchbox, and it has 386 reviews on the Elephant Box site.
The lunchbox alone is £32.50, so it will not clear £50 by itself. For example, adding Elephant Box's 1.2 litre steel bottle at £23 takes the basket to £55.50, which drops to £44.40 with 20% off.
It suits anyone who packs sandwiches, salads or snacks and wants a box that survives a school bag, a pannier or a rucksack. At 2 litres, it fits a full round of sandwiches with room for an apple.
It also works for families cutting down on plastic, since the box has no plastic parts to replace. For a steel bowl from the same brand, see our Elephant Box washing up bowl page.
It is not leakproof. Elephant Box says to pack dressings and anything runny in separate pots, or to buy one of its leakproof boxes instead.
It cannot go in the microwave, because it is steel. You will need to tip food onto a plate to heat it up.
Finally, the 20% referral offer only applies to new customers and to a first order over £50. On its own, the lunchbox does not qualify.
Elephant Box sells it direct, which is where the referral discount works. Amazon UK also lists the box, at a higher price than Elephant Box charges. Elephant Box became a Certified B Corporation in 2025, and it has given 1% of annual sales to environmental groups as a 1% for the Planet member since 2019.
