What the Fryth Pebble chopping board is

Fryth calls it the No.2 Pebble, and it sits in a numbered range of boards that runs from a £30 mini board to a £190 pizza board. The Pebble has no handle. Its soft, rounded outline means it works as a serving board as much as a chopping board.

Fryth is a sister company of the Devon furniture maker Shawstephens, and its boards began as a way to use the timber offcuts from that workshop. Because every board comes from a different piece of wood, the grain and knots vary from one to the next.

Fryth describes its boards as "pieces to be cherished and handed down through your family."

Who the Fryth Pebble suits

It suits cooks who want one good board to chop on and then carry to the table. The walnut version is darker and makes a smart cheese or bread board, while oak is paler.

It also makes a housewarming present that gets used every day. Our best housewarming gifts guide has more ideas in the same spirit.

The limits

At £90, it costs far more than a supermarket board of a similar size. You are paying for one-off timber and hand finishing, not extra features.

It also needs looking after. It cannot go in the dishwasher, and it needs oiling now and then to stop the wood drying out.

Finally, stock is limited, and the oak Pebble had already sold out.

Where to buy it in the UK

Fryth sells the Pebble direct from its own shop, and shops including Butterwalk in Totnes and MAKE Southwest in Bovey Tracey stock its boards too. We could not find it on Amazon UK.
