What the Kindle Paperwhite is

The Paperwhite sits between the basic Kindle and the larger Kindle Scribe. It has a 7-inch, 300ppi E Ink screen that reads like paper in sunlight, plus a front light with adjustable warmth for reading in bed.

The 2024 model was the 12th-generation Paperwhite. Amazon gave it a bigger screen than the 6.8-inch model before it and faster page turns. It is waterproof to IPX8, so a drop in the bath is survivable.

The limits

The price has risen by £35 since April. Amazon raised Kindle prices in August 2026, so its regular sales, such as Black Friday, are more worth waiting for than they used to be.

A Kindle locks you into Amazon's store. You cannot buy books from Kobo or Apple on it, and UK library e-books through Libby do not work on Kindle.

The cheapest version carries lock-screen ads. Removing them costs £15 more at the time of buying.
