The Lamy 2000 fountain pen is a piston-filling pen designed by Gerd A. Müller and made in Heidelberg since 1966. It has a fibreglass body, matt brushed steel fittings and a platinum-coated 14 carat gold nib.
Lamy sells it direct in the UK for £280, in eight nib grades, with free delivery over £100. I checked the price and stock on lamy.com on 11 October 2026.
Gerd A. Müller was born in 1932 and worked as a designer at Braun from 1955 to 1960. Then, in 1966, Lamy launched the 2000 as the pen that set its design language. Lamy has made it ever since.
Lamy was founded in 1930 and still makes its pens at its only production site in Heidelberg. Since February 2024 it has been part of Mitsubishi Pencil, the Japanese stationery company, as Lamy explains on its company page.
| Filling | Piston, so it draws ink straight from a bottle |

| Nib grades | EF, F, M, B, BB, OM, OB, OBB |
| Body | Fibreglass |
| Fittings | Stainless steel, matt brushed finish |

At 140mm long and 26g, it is light in the hand.
A piston pen fills from a bottle. You twist the end of the barrel, dip the nib and twist back. So the recipient will need a bottle of ink, because the pen takes no cartridges.
The upside is choice, since any bottled fountain pen ink will work. The downside is that refilling on a train is not practical, so it suits a desk more than a pocket.
Lamy sells it in eight grades. EF, F and M run from extra fine to medium, while B and BB are broad. The three O grades are oblique, cut at an angle for people who hold the pen rotated.
For a first gift, F or M is the safe choice. However, if you know how they write, a broader nib gives a wetter, bolder line.
The nib is half hidden under the front of the barrel, so it does not show off the gold. If they want a pen that looks like it cost £280, this is not it.
Also, the piston filler means no cartridges at all. If they only ever use cartridges, a cartridge pen will be less hassle.
Lamy delivers free in Great Britain on orders over £100, so this pen ships free. Delivery takes two to five working days.
You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind, and you pay the return postage. The seller is C. Josef Lamy GmbH in Heidelberg.

No. It is a piston filler, so it fills from a bottle of ink.
F or M suits most people. B and BB are broader, and the O grades are oblique nibs for writers who rotate the pen.
Lamy makes it in Heidelberg, Germany, at its only production site.
Gerd A. Müller, who worked at Braun from 1955 to 1960, designed it. It launched in 1966.
