The Lapuan Kankurit hot water bottle called Aurora has a woven wool cover designed by Akira Minagawa, the Japanese designer who founded the label minä perhonen. The pattern is made of overlapping lines inspired by the northern lights, and the cover is woven at the Lapuan Kankurit mill in Lapua, Finland. It holds 2 litres and costs £45 at twentytwentyone, in three colours.
Aurora is a 2 litre hot water bottle inside a removable cover of 100% pure new wool. Lapuan Kankurit weaves the cover in Finland, and then sews it either at its own workshop in Lapua or at its sewing department in Kaunas, Lithuania. The bottle inside is made in Germany by Fashy, from a thermoplastic rather than rubber.
The design is by Akira Minagawa. Describing the northern lights, he says: "I wanted to express this imagery with a simple accumulation of lines." On the cover, those lines run as vertical stripes broken into overlapping blocks.
Lapuan Kankurit is a family weaving company in Lapua, western Finland. Its roots go back to 1917, when Juho Annala founded a felt boot factory in the town. Later, in 1973, Juha and Liisa Hjelt set up their own weaving mill under the Lapuan Kankurit name. Esko and Jaana Hjelt, the fourth generation, took over in 1999, and the fifth generation joined in 2025. The mill weaves wool and linen textiles for the home, including blankets, towels and throws.
Akira Minagawa started minä perhonen in Tokyo in 1995. The name is Finnish: "minä" means "I" and "perhonen" means "butterfly". He chose Finnish words because of his fondness for Finnish life and culture, after travelling around the Nordic countries many times.
Lapuan Kankurit's instructions cover the bottle and the wool cover. The bottle rules are there for safety:
The full care notes are on the Lapuan Kankurit product page.
It is one of the picks in my guide to the best Christmas gifts in the UK, which has twenty more from £15 to £295.
The cover is hand wash only, at 30°C or less, and it cannot go in the tumble dryer. If you want a cover that goes in the washing machine, a fleece one will suit you better.
The wool cover is the part that touches your skin. Anyone who finds wool itchy, or cannot wear it at all, should pick a cotton or fleece cover instead.
twentytwentyone sells it in one size, 2 litres, which is too big to tuck into a coat pocket or a small bag.
The bottle inside is a standard 2 litre Fashy bottle. What the £45 buys over a supermarket hot water bottle is the woven wool cover and the design.
twentytwentyone, the London design shop, sells all three colours at £45 each, and offers gift wrap at checkout. The full design story and the specification are on the Lapuan Kankurit website, and more about the designer is on the minä perhonen site.
