Gumbies Outback slippers are backless felt slippers with a felt upper made from recycled plastic and a grippy recycled rubber sole you can wear out to the bins or the garden. Gumbies says each pair recovers the equivalent of 80 plastic bottles from shorelines and riverbanks. Gumbies UK sells them for £40, and on 23 October 2026 Amazon UK had the grey and curry pair at £42.95.

What Gumbies Outback slippers are

Gumbies is a slipper and sandal brand, and the Outback is the slipper it started with. The upper is a soft double layer of felt made from recycled plastic, which Gumbies offers as a vegan alternative to wool.

Underneath is Gumbies' Gumtread sole, made with recycled rubber and designed for outdoor use as well as indoors. So you can step out of the back door without changing shoes.

Mercredy's recycled-bottle slippers are no longer on sale from Mercredy or D.Franklin, and the Outback is the closest recycled slipper sold new in the UK.

What they do

  • Go outside: the high-grip rubber sole handles a patio, a path or a trip to the bins.
  • Slip on and off: the open back means no bending down to pull them on.
  • Keep feet warm: Gumbies promises no cold feet from the soft double-layer felt upper.
  • Use recycled materials: recycled plastic felt, recycled rubber soles and a foam insole made from plant-derived materials.

The limits

They are backless. That makes them quick to slip on, but they can come off on stairs or when you walk fast.

Amazon UK charges £2.95 more than Gumbies' own shop for the same pair, so check both before you buy.

Half sizes stop at 6.5 for men, so between larger sizes you will need to choose up or down.
