Phox Water Filter

Last updated: 12 October 2026

The Phox water filter is a jug with a refillable cartridge, made by Phox Water in Glasgow. Instead of binning the whole cartridge, you tip out the used granules and pour in a fresh sachet, so the plastic housing stays in use. Phox sells the V2 glass jug and the Wave plastic jug at £39.99 each with three months of refills, and on 12 October 2026 Amazon UK had the V2 with the Clean pack at £39.99, in stock and sold by Phox Water UK.

What the Phox water filter is

Scott Dickson started Phox Water in Glasgow after looking for a way to filter his own tap water. The company launched its refillable cartridge in 2019, and Culligan, the American water treatment group, bought the business in 2023.

A standard filter cartridge goes in the bin when it runs out. With Phox, you keep the cartridge, empty it, and refill it with granules from a sachet. Phox says design, manufacturing, packing and distribution all happen within 50 miles of its Glasgow office.

What it does

  • Refillable cartridge: one cartridge stays in the jug, and only the granules change.
  • Three refill blends: Clean reduces common impurities, Softener targets hard water and limescale, and Alkaline reduces impurities while adding magnesium and calcium back in.
  • Refill life: each sachet lasts 45 days or 200 litres, and a three-month pack holds two sachets.
  • Letterbox refills: the packs are sized to fit through a standard UK letterbox.
  • Reminders: the Phox app keeps track of when the next refill is due.
  • Brita jugs too: a refillable cartridge fits jugs that take Brita Maxtra and Maxtra+ cartridges. Phox currently gives that cartridge away and charges only for the refill pack.

Key facts

  • Phox V2: 2.2 litre glass jug with a matte black finish and a non-slip base, £39.99 with a three-month pack or £68.85 with twelve months
  • Phox Wave: 2.8 litre plastic jug, £39.99 with a three-month pack or £64.60 with twelve months
  • Refill packs: £14.99 for three months or £49.99 for twelve months, in Clean, Softener or Alkaline
  • Running cost: a £14.99 pack covers 400 litres, which works out at roughly 3.7p a litre. By comparison, a six-pack of Brita MAXTRA PRO cartridges costs £37.49 for 900 litres, or about 4.2p a litre. Both prices were checked on 12 October 2026.
  • Made in: Scotland
  • Amazon rating: 4.4 out of 5 from 1,151 ratings on the V2 listing, checked on 12 October 2026
  • Trustpilot: 4.7 out of 5 from 12,087 reviews of Phox Water, checked on 12 October 2026

Who the Phox water filter suits

  • Hard-water households: the Softener and Clean blends both target the chalky taste and limescale that hard tap water brings.
  • People cutting plastic waste: the cartridge is kept, so the bin only takes the spent granules and the sachet.
  • Brita owners: the Maxtra-compatible cartridge lets you try the refills without buying a new jug.
  • Gift buyers: the glass V2 works as a housewarming present at around £40.

We have used Phox at home, and our Phox water filter review covers how the refills work day to day.

The limits

Refilling takes more effort than clicking in a new cartridge. You have to empty the old granules and pour in the new ones, which can get messy over a sink.

The jugs are not large. The V2 holds 2.2 litres, so a busy household may refill it several times a day.

The glass V2 is heavier than a plastic jug and can break if dropped. In addition, the Wave is plastic, so you still buy some plastic up front.

Finally, the twelve-month bundles cost more up front, although the price per refill drops.
