What the Polaroid Hi-Print is

This is a dye-sublimation printer, which Polaroid calls dye diffusion thermal transfer. The paper passes through four times to lay down the colour, so there is no ink to refill.

Each print is 54mm by 86mm, roughly the size of a bank card. The back peels off, so you can stick the photo in a notebook, on a laptop or on the fridge.

What it does

  • Prints from your phone: pair it over Bluetooth, pick a photo in the Hi-Print app and print.
  • Edits before printing: the app adds frames, templates and memes to your shots.
  • Runs on a battery: one charge gives up to 20 prints, and a full charge takes under an hour over USB-C.
  • Fits in a bag: it weighs 255g without a cartridge, so it travels well.

The limits

The paper is the running cost. A single 20-sheet pack works out at about 80p a print. Even the five-pack deal, at £13 a pack, still costs 65p a print.

It only takes Hi-Print 2x3 cartridges, so you cannot shop around for cheaper paper.

Neither a cartridge nor a USB-C cable comes in the box. Budget for a pack of paper on top of the printer.

The prints are small. If you want frame-sized photos, a home printer or an online lab will suit you better.
