Terracotta Tevaplanter, a textured ceramic cone with leafy plants growing on its outside, on a kitchen worktop

Tevaplanter Self-Watering Ceramic Planter

Last updated: 25 October 2026

The Tevaplanter is a self-watering planter with no soil. You fill the porous ceramic vessel with water, and the plant grows on its outer surface, drinking slowly through the clay. On 25 October 2026 Tevaplanter's shop had it at $80 (about £60 at the European Central Bank rate on 23 October 2026; convert it at today's rate), in terracotta or slate, with worldwide shipping.

What the Tevaplanter is

The planter launched on Kickstarter in 2020 under the name Terraplanter, according to The Gadgeteer. The shop now says its campaigns have raised more than $7 million.

Meanwhile, the vessel is handmade ceramic from Italy. Tevaplanter says it tested the clay in labs to balance how porous it is and how much water it holds. As a result, it suits a wide range of plants.

What it does

  • Waters the plant for you: the hollow vessel is a reservoir, and water seeps through the clay to the roots on the outside.
  • Skips the soil: instead, plants grow straight on the ceramic surface, so there is no compost to spill.
  • Grows from seeds: the shop sells grass and chia seeds at $5 a pack to start one off.
  • Shows the roots: as the plant grows, its roots spread across the ceramic, in plain view.

Key facts

  • Price: $80, about £60 (convert it at today's rate), or $72 each when you buy two
  • Colours: terracotta or slate
  • Size: 22.8cm high with an 11.4cm base
  • Weight: 1kg
  • Material: handmade porous ceramic, made in Italy
  • Extras: seeds, a Big Base and gift cards sold separately
  • Shipping: worldwide, with prices in US dollars

Who the Tevaplanter suits

  • People who forget to water plants: a full reservoir keeps feeding the plant for days at a time, according to The Gadgeteer.
  • Small flats and desks: because it stands under 23cm tall and needs no soil, it fits on a narrow shelf.
  • Design fans: because the vessel and the roots are on show, it works as an ornament as well as a planter.

The limits

First, the shop prices its planters in US dollars. So the pound price moves with the exchange rate, and import charges may apply when it reaches the UK.

I struggled to find a UK stockist, and Amazon UK search showed only other planters. Also, seeds are not included, so budget another $5 for a pack.

However, not every houseplant will take to a soil-free life. Tevaplanter has a grow guide, so read it before you move a favourite plant over.

Finally, the product page does not give a UK delivery price, so check the shipping cost and dispatch time at checkout.

Where to buy the Tevaplanter in the UK

Tevaplanter sells direct from its own shop and ships worldwide. The Tevaplanter product page has the specification, the grow guide and both colours.
