What the graphite To Pimp a Butterfly vinyl is

To Pimp a Butterfly is Kendrick Lamar's third studio album. Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath and Interscope released it on 15 March 2015, with Dr. Dre among the executive producers.

The album mixes rap with jazz, funk and soul. Thundercat, George Clinton, Snoop Dogg and Ronald Isley all appear on it. It won Best Rap Album at the 2016 Grammy Awards and was nominated for Album of the Year.

For the tenth anniversary, his UK store sold this pressing as a store-only edition. So you could not pick it up in a record shop or on Amazon.

Who it suits

  • Kendrick Lamar fans with a record player: it is the full album, and the alternate sleeve sets it apart from the standard black double LP.
  • Collectors of coloured vinyl: the store's photos show a marbled grey finish on both discs.
  • Anyone buying for a hip-hop or jazz fan: the album pulls from both, with Thundercat and Terrace Martin among the producers.

If the person you are buying for does not have a deck yet, our guide to the best budget turntables in the UK covers seven decks from £129 to £249.

The limits

It has sold out, and the store has not said whether it will press more.

The store lists no remaster or new mix for this pressing. The differences from the standard double LP are the colour and the sleeve, so it is a buy for the look rather than the sound.

It is 140g vinyl, a standard weight.

Where to look for it in the UK

The graphite edition was only ever sold through Kendrick Lamar's official UK store, so that is the place to watch for a restock. The album's background, credits and awards are listed on Wikipedia's To Pimp a Butterfly entry.
