God Save The King is an inkwash that Gilbert & George paint by hand, one sheet at a time, then sign and number. Each God Save The King inkwash is 100 x 70cm on 400gsm watercolour paper, with the four words brushed in blue and red. The Gilbert & George Centre shop sells it unframed for £2,000, in a portrait version and a landscape one.
Gilbert & George have worked as a single artist since they met as students in 1967. Their best-known pictures are big, gridded photo-works, while these royal sheets are lettered by hand in ink.
The Centre's shop added God Save The King in May 2023, the month King Charles III was crowned. It sits in a set of royal inkwashes alongside III Cheers for Charles and Long Live the King, all at the same price. Because every sheet is painted rather than printed, the drips and brush edges change from one number to the next. The shop photographs each numbered sheet, so you can choose the one you like before you buy.
For more presents in the same spirit, our gifts for artists and creatives guide covers prints, books and objects at lower prices.
£2,000 is a lot for a single sheet of lettering, and the price is the same whichever number you pick.
It arrives unframed. A sheet this size needs a large frame with glazing, which adds a sizeable bill on top.
Watercolour paper and ink fade in strong light, so hang it away from a sunny window.
The only seller is the Gilbert & George Centre, so there is no second shop to compare prices or delivery with.
The Gilbert & George Centre shop sells both versions online. The Centre itself is at 5a Heneage Street in Spitalfields, east London, in a converted 19th-century brewery that opened to the public on 1 April 2023 with free entry. Wallpaper's interview with the artists covers how the building came together.
