A 70cl bottle of Sentia Cask, a 0.5% ABV whisky alternative from GABA Labs

Sentia Cask

Last updated: 12 October 2026

Sentia Cask is a 0.5% ABV alternative to dark spirits such as whisky, made by GABA Labs, the company co-founded by Professor David Nutt. It carries a double-strength version of the botanical blend in Sentia's Red, Black and Gold bottles, with light smoke, vanilla and a spicy finish. A 70cl bottle costs £34.25 on the Sentia shop, where I checked the price and stock on 12 October 2026.

What Sentia Cask is

Sentia calls Cask a functional alcohol alternative for fans of dark, malty spirits. The Sentia shop now labels the current bottle a new recipe. Like the rest of Sentia, it aims for a relaxed, sociable mood without getting you drunk.

The idea behind it comes from Nutt's work on how alcohol acts on GABA, the brain's main calming chemical messenger. Sentia says its plant extracts help your own GABA work more effectively. Cask uses double the strength of that blend, so the serving limit is lower than on the 50cl bottles.

What is in Sentia Cask

  • Botanicals: magnolia bark, ashwagandha root, passion flower and ginseng root, plus oak bark
  • Other ingredients: water, agave syrup, citric acid and potassium sorbate
  • Calories: 5 kcal and 1g of sugar per 25ml serving
  • Liquorice: the label carries a liquorice warning, and Sentia says people with high blood pressure should avoid drinking a lot of it
  • Taste: Sentia describes it as spicy and warm, with light smoke and vanilla

Who Sentia Cask suits

Cask suits adults who used to drink whisky or rum and want something with the same smoky warmth on a night off. It suits anyone who wants a drink to sip slowly rather than a long mixer, since the daily limit is two small measures.

Our Sentia Cask review covers how it tastes in a glass, and our GABA drinks comparison sets it against the rest of the range and Impossibrew.

The limits of Sentia Cask

Cask is not alcohol-free in the UK sense. Government guidance keeps "alcohol free" for drinks of 0.05% ABV or less, and 0.5% sits in the low-alcohol bracket. If you need to avoid alcohol completely, Sentia's Red, Black and Gold bottles are the ones to look at.

Sentia does not recommend Cask during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people on medication. Because of the liquorice, people with high blood pressure should keep to small amounts.

The effect is Sentia's own claim, and it varies from person to person. At the 50ml daily limit, a 70cl bottle lasts 14 days, which works out at about £2.45 an evening before any mixer.

Where to buy Sentia Cask in the UK

Sentia sells Cask on its own shop and ships UK orders from stock held in Europe. Orders usually leave in 1 to 2 working days, and the shop currently warns of up to 72 hours while it moves warehouse. The GOV.UK low-alcohol descriptors guidance explains how 0.5% drinks may be labelled.

For the 50cl Red, Black and Gold bottles, see our Sentia non-alcoholic spirit page.
