Papersmiths started in Clifton, Bristol, in 2013. Since then it has opened shops in Brighton and on Pavilion Road in Chelsea. Then, in 2021, it began making its own notebooks and pens. So this set puts four of those own-brand pieces into one box.

• Pocket Notebook, Sapphire Blue: A6, with 80 ruled pages of 100gsm fountain-pen-friendly paper. The cover, meanwhile, is blind-embossed board made in the Lake District.
• Pocket Pen, Raw Steel: a refillable ballpoint, 91mm long, with an anodised aluminium body. It writes in black through a 0.5mm needlepoint tip.
• Pocket Pencil, Butter Yellow: a cedar mechanical pencil with a brass knock and steel clip. It takes 0.5mm leads.
• Notebook Band, Sky Blue: Czech elastic that keeps the notebook shut and holds up to five pens.

Finally, everything arrives in pink shredded paper inside a Lake District paper box, tied with a pink grosgrain ribbon. You can also add a handwritten note at checkout.

How big it is

A6 is a sheet of A4 folded in half, so the notebook fits a coat pocket or a small bag. Likewise, the pen and pencil are 91mm and 105mm long, which is shorter than a standard pencil.

Even the box is slim, at 23 x 17cm and 2.5cm deep.

It suits someone who writes on the move, such as lists on the train or notes in meetings. Because every piece is pocket sized, it works better as an everyday carry than as a desk set.

The limits

The pen and pencil are small, so they feel short in a large hand. The set also includes no spare refill or leads. So add those separately if they will use it every day.

However, there is only one 80-page notebook in the set. For someone who fills pages quickly, a second notebook is the obvious add-on.

Delivery and returns

Royal Mail Tracked 48 is free over £40, so this set ships free on its own. DPD next working day costs £7.95, or nothing over £100, if you order before midday on a weekday.
