What the Rains Backpack is

Rains is a Copenhagen brand that makes waterproof coats, bags and accessories. This pack has a square body, a flap held shut by magnet snaps, and a carabiner closure on the front.

Inside, there is one main compartment, a flat laptop pocket and a small zip pocket. A second zip pocket on the back panel keeps a phone hidden against your back.

What it does

  • Keeps the rain off: the fabric has an 8,000mm water column rating. Rains gives the bag its W3 grade, which it describes as waterproof protection from light rain.
  • Carries a work laptop: the flat internal pocket fits a 15 inch laptop in a sleeve.
  • Carries two ways: adjustable shoulder straps, plus a webbing handle on top.

Key facts

  • Price: £100 from Rains, £72.81 for black on Amazon UK
  • Capacity: 18 litres
  • Size: 50cm tall, 30cm wide and 12cm deep. The width is about the long side of an A4 sheet.
  • Weight: 860g empty, a little under a 1kg bag of sugar
  • Fabric: 100% polyester with Rains' PU coating
  • Colours at Rains UK: Black, Green and Dark Grey
  • Warranty: two years, with 30-day returns direct from Rains

Who it suits

  • Walkers and train commuters: 18 litres takes a laptop, a lunch and a folded jacket. The coated fabric keeps a shower out on the walk to the station.
  • People who want a smart work bag: the front is a single flap with no zips or pockets on show.

The limits

First, the W3 rating is for light rain. Rains does not claim it for heavy, sustained downpours. So a long cycle in a storm is outside what the maker promises.

Second, you cannot put it in the washing machine. Rains says do not wash, tumble dry, iron, dry clean or bleach it. Instead, you wipe it clean. Rains sells a £15 Fabric Cleaner for stubborn marks.

Third, there is only one main compartment. Small items sink to the bottom, so a pouch helps if you carry chargers and cables.

Finally, 18 litres is a commuting size. It will not swallow gym kit and a laptop at the same time.

Where to buy it in the UK

On 12 October 2026 Rains charged £100 in all three colours. Its free delivery starts at £99, so the bag qualifies on its own. The full specification and care instructions are on the Rains UK product page.

Amazon UK had the black version at £72.81 on the same day, sold by a third-party seller. Check the delivery date before you order, because stock there changes.

It is also our top pick in our guide to the best commuter backpacks in the UK. That guide compares eleven packs from £45 to £450.

FAQs

Is the Rains Backpack waterproof?

The fabric is rated to an 8,000mm water column. Rains grades the bag W3, which it defines as waterproof protection from light rain. So it suits showers rather than all-day downpours.

What size laptop fits?

Rains says the flat internal pocket fits a 15 inch laptop in a sleeve. The bag is 30cm wide, so measure a larger machine before you buy.

How much does it cost in the UK?

£100 direct from Rains, with free delivery from £99. On 12 October 2026 Amazon UK had the black version at £72.81.

Can you wash it?

No. Rains says do not wash, tumble dry, iron, dry clean or bleach it. Wipe it with a damp cloth, or use the Rains Fabric Cleaner for tougher marks.
