Gilbert & George are the two men who work as one artist, in matching suits, from Spitalfields in East London since the late 1960s. Here you will find our take on their work, where to see Gilbert & George now, the signed inkwashes and prints you can buy, books, and recent auction results.
Our take on Gilbert & George
They met in 1967 at St Martins School of Art and have exhibited as Gilbert & George ever since, according to White Cube. They work in large gridded photo-pieces in their own frames, under the motto “Art for All”. “We’ve always been fascinated by the detritus of life, what is left over, what is in the gutter, what is not of interest to anyone,” they told White Cube.
Their own free museum, the Gilbert & George Centre, opened in a restored former brewery on Heneage Street, off Brick Lane, in April 2023. It shows their work in rotating displays and is the easiest place to see it in London.
Gilbert & George editions are unusually accessible for artists of their standing: the Centre sells hand-painted, signed and numbered inkwashes from £2,000 and signed White Prints from £1,500. Their big framed pieces sell at auction in the tens of thousands.
