Bridget Riley is the London-born painter whose black and white, then colour, stripes and curves make the eye move. Here you will find our take on her work and her recent shows at Tate Britain and Turner Contemporary.

Our take on Bridget Riley

Riley was born in London in 1931 and studied at Goldsmiths and the Royal College of Art, according to Tate.

Of her 1963 painting Fall, she has said it is “a field of visual energy, which accumulates until it reaches maximum tension.”

In 2025 she gave Tate a new painting, Concerto I (2024), shown in a free display at Tate Britain until June 2026.
