LUMI Keys is now Piano M

The name changed, the hardware did not. ROLI put it plainly in two separate answers on their own site:

LUMI has unified with ROLI, and we will no longer be using the LUMI name for our products... LUMI Keys and LUMI Keys Studio Edition are now Piano M.

LUMI Keys and Piano M are the same product. Your existing instrument will continue to work as before, and will continue to receive any firmware updates.

So an owner of LUMI Keys owns a Piano M, and the two will connect to each other over the magnetic DNA connectors as though nothing had happened. The parent company is now Luminary ROLI Ltd. The Seaboard Block went through the same tidying up and is now the Seaboard M.

How the lights teach

Each of the 24 keys carries its own full-colour light, which ROLI call Brightkey. The Learn app sends the next note to the keyboard and the key glows, so a beginner follows colour rather than notation. Colour also maps to note names and to hand position, so the left hand and right hand can be told apart on screen and on the keys at the same time.

That is the whole pedagogy and it has an obvious limit. Following lights is not reading music. It gets somebody playing a recognisable tune in an evening, and it does not on its own teach the skill of looking at a stave and knowing what to do. ROLI's lessons do cover notation, but the lights are the hook.

The keys are small, and the plunge is not

Piano M uses ROLI's DS 5.5 key size: 9.67mm across the high keys and 19.4mm across the low ones, against roughly 13.7mm and 23mm on a full-size piano. Two octaves sit under your hands, and octave shift buttons reach a full seven.

The number that surprises people is the plunge. The keys travel 10mm, which ROLI put at 92% of the depth of a grand piano key. So the action feels closer to a real instrument than the width suggests. They are also pressure-responsive, with polyphonic aftertouch and per-key pitchbend, which is unusual at this price and means the keyboard is a usable MIDI controller once the lessons are finished with.

The subscription is the part to price properly

£219 buys the keyboard. It does not buy the lessons. ROLI Learn membership starts at £8.33 a month, which is £99.96 across a year, so a year of actually using the thing as intended is about £319 rather than £219. Memberships renew at the end of the billing period and can be cancelled from your ROLI account.

Against that, a weekly piano lesson in London runs to considerably more, and ROLI lean on the comparison, quoting a saving from £1,900 a year. Treat their figure as their own arithmetic rather than a measured average. The honest version is simpler: the app is cheaper than a teacher and worse than a teacher, and which of those matters more depends on whether anybody in the house will practise without being watched.

Two keyboards, and what joining them gets you

Four DNA connectors sit around the edge. Two Piano Ms click together into a four-octave run, which is the point at which two-handed playing stops being cramped, and ROLI Learn supports two keyboards joined this way. A Piano M will also connect to a Seaboard M, although in that pairing each keyboard keeps its own selectable range rather than forming one continuous keyboard.

Adding a second unit costs another £219 and there is no discount for doing it as a pair, which the next section covers.

What ROLI's bundles actually save you

Seven of ROLI's eight bundles cost exactly what the parts cost separately. Checking the arithmetic takes a minute and it changes what you buy.

Only the Seaboard 2 pairing saves money, and it is the only one ROLI mark with a saving. Everywhere else, start with one Piano M and add the second later at no penalty.

The 20% referral, and its conditions

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits an adult beginner who has meant to learn for years, a household where a full piano will not fit, and a parent buying for a child who already likes screens. Six hours of battery and 677g mean it goes to a grandparent's house in a bag.

It does not suit anybody who already reads music and wants a controller, because the narrow keys and the learning app are both beside the point for them. That reader wants the Seaboard M or a full-size weighted board. It also does not suit anyone unwilling to pay the monthly fee, because the keyboard on its own is a small MIDI controller with pretty lights and no lessons.

Do you have to pay the subscription?

Will it work with a Mac or an iPad?

It connects over USB-C or Bluetooth 5.0 and is class-compliant for MIDI over both, so it behaves as a standard MIDI device. The ROLI Learn app is the part with its own device requirements, which ROLI list on their site.

How long does the battery last?

Six hours, from a 2,300mAh cell, charging in four to five hours. The Seaboard M gets ten hours from the same size battery because it has no lights to run.
