What the Yoto Player is

The Yoto Player is a small cube of a speaker with a pixel display on the front and two orange dials on top. Instead of a screen, it uses physical cards. Each card carries one audiobook, album or activity, and Yoto's library now runs to more than 1,000 titles, from Julia Donaldson and Roald Dahl to Disney and Harry Potter.

Children control it in three moves. They push a card in to start it, press the chunky buttons for free extra audio such as radio and podcasts, and twist the dials to skip chapters and change the volume. Parents set limits, such as maximum volume, in the free Yoto app.

What it does

• Stories and music without a screen: the display shows simple pixel artwork, not video.
• Night light: seven colours, and turning the player face down after lights out leaves just the glow.
• Ok-to-wake clock: you set the time, and the clock and light change to show your child it is time to get up.
• Room thermometer: the display shows the bedroom temperature.
• Offline listening: it stores more than 600 hours of audio, so cards downloaded over WiFi still play in the car.
• Bluetooth speaker and headphones: it plays audio from your phone, and children can listen through wired or wireless headphones.
• Make Your Own cards: you can put your own MP3s, a podcast or a grandparent reading a story onto a blank card.

The limits

The cards are where the cost builds up. The player comes with one blank card, so every story beyond the free audio means buying a card or recording your own.

The display can be too bright for some children at bedtime. GoodtoKnow's reviewer found you need to turn the player face down at night, and that it is not as tumble-proof as a Toniebox.

Yoto has now launched a Yoto Player 4th Gen. The 3rd Generation stays on sale as Yoto's classic home player, but if you want the newest model, compare the two on Yoto's site before you buy.

The wireless charging dock costs extra, and setup needs WiFi and a smartphone with the Yoto app.

Amazon UK sells the 3rd Generation player at £89.99, sold by Yoto Limited, with a 4.7 out of 5 rating from 923 reviews. Yoto's own shop lists it at the same price with free delivery over £40 and 60-day returns, but showed it out of stock with a notify-me button.
