Elizabeth Dimitroff is the London-based British-American artist who paints soft, hazy oil scenes of swimmers, bathers and half-remembered rooms. Here you will find our take on her work, where to see Elizabeth Dimitroff now, how to buy her paintings, and her small panel in this year’s War Child auction.
Our take on Elizabeth Dimitroff
Dimitroff paints figures that seem to dissolve into their surroundings: a swimmer in green water, a bather by a still lake, a man asleep on a red bed. The edges are soft and the colours are chalky, like a memory that is starting to fade. She came to it sideways, after a degree in furniture design. “I wasn’t formally trained as a painter, so my learning process was initially intuitive,” she told Cold Magazine.
Her War Child piece, Runner, is an oil on panel. A naked male figure, painted in rosy pinks and reds, runs away from us across a pale blue-green ground. He is slightly blurred, as if caught mid-stride on a slow shutter. One heel kicks up behind him, and a soft grey shadow sits underneath. The linen-like texture of the ground shows through the paint.
She is clear about when a picture is done. “The painting is complete when it is an ambivalent, yet discernible impression of an experience or observation,” she said in the same feature. She had her first New York solo show in 2024 and has two UK presentations lined up for 2026 and 2027, so this is an early chance to own her work.
