How the SMARTY refer a friend scheme works

The SMARTY refer a friend programme rewards both the person referring and the person joining. Here is how it works step by step:

  1. Sign up using a referral link. Use our SMARTY referral link to order a free SIM or eSIM and choose a plan.
  2. Activate your SIM and pick a plan. Pop the SIM into your phone (or activate your eSIM), select your preferred plan and start using SMARTY.
  3. Stay active for three months. Renew your plan for a third consecutive month. Both you and the referrer become eligible for the reward once this renewal is confirmed.
  4. Choose your £40 voucher. Within 30 days of becoming eligible, you will receive an email from Buyapowa (SMARTY's rewards partner) inviting you to pick your reward. Choose from PayPal (cash to your account), an Amazon.co.uk gift card, a John Lewis and Partners gift card (valid at Waitrose too), or an Uber gift card (valid for Uber Eats too).
  5. Claim within 90 days. Follow the link in the email and redeem your chosen voucher. You will receive a unique code to spend with your selected retailer.

There is no limit on how many friends an existing SMARTY customer can refer. Every successful referral earns another reward, making it one of the more generous refer-a-friend schemes in UK mobile.

What you get

With the current SMARTY refer a friend offer, both the referrer and the new customer each receive a £40 voucher when the new joiner signs up on a qualifying plan and stays for three months. Your voucher options are:

  • PayPal — cash paid directly to your PayPal account
  • Amazon.co.uk — digital gift card
  • John Lewis and Partners — gift card also valid at Waitrose
  • Uber — gift card also valid for Uber Eats

Reward values are based on the plan tier at the point of qualifying renewal. The £40 reward applies to plans costing £15 or more per month. SMARTY periodically updates its promotional reward tiers, so check the SMARTY refer a friend page for the latest terms.

Why SMARTY is worth joining

The referral voucher is a nice bonus, but it is SMARTY's core offering that makes it worth sticking around for. All plans include unlimited UK calls and texts, 5G at no extra cost, free EU roaming (up to 12GB data), Wi-Fi calling, VoLTE and unrestricted tethering. Plans start from around £6 per month and run on 30-day rolling contracts with no credit check and no annual price rises.

Eligibility and key terms

Before signing up through a referral link, it is worth knowing the main eligibility rules:

  • You must be a new SMARTY customer. If you have previously had a SMARTY SIM, you may not qualify for the referral reward.
  • You need to stay active for three consecutive months. If you cancel or your plan lapses before your third renewal, neither party receives the reward.
  • The reward value is based on the plan price at your qualifying renewal date, not the plan you initially chose. If you downgrade before the third month, the voucher amount may be lower.
  • Rewards are not available on Group plans. If the new customer joins a SMARTY Group, the referral does not qualify.
  • The referral reward email comes from Buyapowa, SMARTY's third-party rewards partner. Check your spam or junk folder if you do not see it within 30 days of becoming eligible.
  • You must claim your voucher within 90 days of receiving the email, or it will expire.

Full terms and conditions are available in the SMARTY Refer a Friend terms (PDF).

How to switch your number to SMARTY

If you want to keep your existing phone number when you join, the process follows Ofcom's Text to Switch rules:

  1. Text PAC to 65075 from your current network. You will receive your Porting Authorisation Code by text.
  2. Sign up to SMARTY using our referral link and provide your PAC during activation.
  3. SMARTY will transfer your number, usually within one working day, with no gap in service.

If you do not need to keep your old number, simply skip the PAC step and SMARTY will assign a new one.

SMARTY refer a friend: frequently asked questions

How much do you get for a SMARTY referral?

With the current offer, both the referrer and the new customer each receive a £40 voucher when the new joiner is on a plan costing £15 or more per month and stays for three months. Reward values may differ for lower-tier plans, so check the SMARTY website for the latest tiers.

How long does it take to get the SMARTY referral reward?

You become eligible after your third monthly renewal. Within 30 days of that date, you will receive an email from Buyapowa to choose your voucher. You then have 90 days to claim it.

Can I refer more than one friend?

Yes. There is no limit on the number of friends you can refer. Each successful referral earns you another voucher. SMARTY will also send you up to two free physical referral SIM cards per month to hand out to friends and family.

What voucher options are available?

You can choose from PayPal (cash to your account), Amazon.co.uk, John Lewis and Partners (including Waitrose), or Uber (including Uber Eats).

Do I need to be on a specific plan to qualify?

Any SMARTY voice plan qualifies for the referral scheme, but the reward value depends on the plan price. The £40 voucher applies to plans at £15 per month or above. Group plan members are not eligible for referral rewards.

What happens if I change my plan before the third month?

The reward is based on your plan price at the qualifying renewal date (your third month). If you downgrade to a cheaper plan before then, your voucher value will reflect the lower tier.
