If you have been hunting for a cheap, flexible SIM-only deal in the UK, chances are SMARTY has popped up on your radar. In this SMARTY review we put the network through its paces, covering plans, pricing, coverage, the referral scheme and everything in between, to help you decide whether it is genuinely worth the switch in 2026.
What is SMARTY?
SMARTY is a SIM-only mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) owned and operated by Three UK (Hutchison 3G UK Limited). Launched in 2017, it was built to be a stripped-back, no-frills alternative to its parent brand. Everything is managed online, there are no high-street shops, and there are no handset contracts. You bring your own phone, pick a plan and get on with your life.
All SMARTY plans run on 30-day rolling contracts. There are no credit checks, no annual price rises and no lock-in periods. If it is not working for you after a month, you simply leave. That simplicity is a big part of what makes SMARTY appealing, and what sets it apart from many of the bigger networks.
First impressions
Signing up is refreshingly painless. You choose a plan on the SMARTY website, order a free SIM (or set up an eSIM if your device supports it), and activate it in minutes. Number porting from your old network is handled via the standard PAC code process and usually completes within a working day.
The SMARTY app is clean and straightforward. You can check your data usage, manage your plan, request add-ons and access your referral dashboard without wading through menus. It does the basics well, which is on brand for the whole operation.
One thing worth noting: eSIM is now available, though at the time of writing it appears to be limited to existing customers in some cases. If you specifically need eSIM from day one (for instance, if you have a newer iPhone without a physical SIM tray), double-check availability on the SMARTY site before ordering.
Plans and pricing
SMARTY's lineup covers a range of data allowances, all with unlimited UK calls and texts included as standard. Plans start from around £6 per month for smaller data pots and go up to £20 per month for unlimited data. At the time of writing, there is a promotional deal offering unlimited data for £17 per month for new customers.
Every plan includes 5G at no extra cost (provided you have a compatible device and are in a 5G area), free EU roaming with a 12GB fair-use data cap, Wi-Fi calling, VoLTE, and unrestricted tethering. That is a genuinely generous feature set for the price.
SMARTY also offers a handful of "Data Discount" plans at lower data tiers, where you get money back for any data you do not use. It is a nice touch if you are a light user who wants the reassurance of a safety net without paying for data you will never touch. Data add-ons cost £1 per GB and never expire while your SIM is active, which is fairer than the overage charges some networks hit you with.
For families or groups, SMARTY's Group plan gives a 10% discount on every plan when you add multiple SIMs to a single account. Everyone can be on different plans, and you can add or remove members at any time. It is one of the more flexible family setups we have seen in the UK market.

Coverage and performance
SMARTY piggybacks on Three's full network infrastructure, which means you get the same 4G and 5G coverage as a direct Three customer. Three claims 4G coverage for roughly 99% of the UK population, and its 5G network now reaches over 300 towns and cities.
A significant recent development is the ongoing Three-Vodafone network integration through the Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN). This means SMARTY SIMs can increasingly connect to Vodafone masts as well as Three's own, which is gradually plugging coverage gaps in areas where Three historically struggled, particularly in some rural spots.
In our experience, day-to-day performance in urban areas is solid. Streaming, video calls and general browsing all work without drama. 5G speeds are impressive where available, and independent tests from outlets like SIM Sherpa and Expert Reviews have noted strong speed results for SMARTY users.
The weak points are the usual Three network gripes: coverage can thin out in very rural locations, and congestion can slow things down in busy areas or at large events. Value for money
This is where SMARTY really earns its stripes. Plans are consistently among the cheapest SIM-only deals in the UK, and the fact that 5G, EU roaming, tethering and Wi-Fi calling are all included at no extra cost is genuinely hard to beat at this price point.
The no-annual-price-rise pledge is a standout. While networks like EE, Vodafone and even Three itself apply annual mid-contract increases (often CPI plus a fixed percentage), SMARTY keeps your price locked for as long as you stay on your plan. In a market where bill creep is a real frustration, that transparency matters.
SMARTY also runs a solid refer-a-friend scheme. Compared to rivals like giffgaff, VOXI, Lebara and iD Mobile, SMARTY holds its own on price and often wins on flexibility and features. The main trade-off is the lack of handset deals, but if you already own a phone or are happy buying one separately, that is a non-issue.
Customer service
This is SMARTY's weakest area. Support is entirely online: live chat (with an AI bot as the first line of defence), email, and a community forum. There is no phone number to call.
The bot handles basic queries (plan changes, data usage, activation) reasonably well, but if you have a more complex issue, getting through to a human agent can be slow. Several Trustpilot reviewers flag delays and inconsistent quality once you do reach a person. SMARTY does have a published support email ([email protected]), which is a step up from some MVNOs, but response times vary.
On the positive side, SMARTY currently holds a 4 out of 5 "Great" rating on Trustpilot from over 46,000 reviews, which is among the highest of any UK mobile network. Most complaints relate to specific issues (number porting glitches, roaming activation hiccups) rather than systemic problems. For the majority of users, the self-service app and help centre will handle most needs without ever needing to contact support.
If responsive, hands-on customer service is a priority for you, a network like Tesco Mobile or Sky Mobile may suit you better. But if you are comfortable managing things yourself online, SMARTY's approach is perfectly workable.

If you want a SIM-only deal that does exactly what it says on the tin without locking you in or nickel-and-diming you with extras, it is one of the best options in the UK right now.
The main drawbacks are the online-only customer support (which can be hit and miss), the 12GB EU roaming data cap for heavier travellers, and Three's coverage gaps in some rural areas, though the Vodafone network sharing is steadily improving that last point.
Overall, a solid 4/5 Stone cold. SMARTY impressed us with its transparency, pricing and sheer flexibility, but it did not quite reach Ice cold because the customer service experience lags behind the best in the market, and coverage still is not bulletproof everywhere.
