Andrew Maughan is the London-based artist from Newcastle who paints sharp, media-sourced pictures of power, fear and politics. Here you will find our take on his work, where Andrew Maughan has shown, how to buy his paintings, and his portrait of Rachel Corrie in this year’s War Child auction.

Our take on Andrew Maughan

Maughan paints the news. His source images come from the papers and the screen, and he turns them into flat, graphic paintings about who holds power. For years his star was the Great Assassin, a hooded figure who does nothing more sinister than smoke and eat ice cream. “In Maughan’s paintings, the sinister is consistently undermined by the mundane,” his own lot notes explain.

His War Child piece, Rachel Corrie, Fifth Grade, is oil on board in pinks, mauves and deep plum. A girl with long hair tied back speaks into a microphone, mid-sentence, in a patterned top. The background is a soft pink blur. It relates to Rachel, a larger portrait in his September show, which came from a video of Corrie speaking at a press conference on world hunger when she was ten.

The context matters. Corrie was the American activist killed by an Israeli army bulldozer in Gaza in 2003, while trying to stop the demolition of a Palestinian home, as Larkin Durey sets out. In Hypernormal her portrait faced paintings of the Tate brothers as children. Seen alone, this small version is quieter and more direct.
