Anna Pakosz is the Budapest-born, London-based artist who makes energetic abstract paintings on unstretched fabric with paint, bleach and rust. Here you will find our take on her work, where to see Anna Pakosz now, how to buy her work, and her two small panels in this year’s War Child auction.

Our take on Anna Pakosz

Pakosz paints with her whole body. She works on large sheets of unstretched fabric that move between home, studio and outdoors, and she attacks them with paint, bleach and rust. The results are layered, fast and slow at once. “Rooted in a post-communist Eastern European context, my practice is a form of reclamation,” she writes on her own site.

Her two War Child lots are acrylic on plywood. 351 has a dark green ground scored with circular ridges, like a record groove, over patches of plum and pink. A column of sprayed red zigzags runs down the middle into a flat band of lavender blue. Xica is busier: dashes of blue paint stripe across a pale grey surface, with smudges of black and a thick red bar near the bottom.

She also sees the work as a way of learning. “By shifting perspectives often, I notice my assumptions about the work, about art, about the world,” she writes in the same statement. Earlier this year, Tracey Emin included her work in Crossing into Darkness in Margate, alongside Edvard Munch and Louise Bourgeois.
