Darren Cullen is the south London satirical artist behind Spelling Mistakes Cost Lives, who turns the language of advertising against itself. Here you will find our take on his work, from Dismaland to the Hell Bus, and the objects you can buy from £17.

Our take on Darren Cullen

Cullen studied advertising before deciding he wanted nothing to do with it. His About page quotes him calling it “an appalling way to make a living and an even worse way to sustain an economy”. He moved to Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art and now uses advertising’s own tricks against it.

“I think about this stuff as anti-advertising, or anti-propaganda,” he told Euronews in 2022. His projects include Pocket Money Loans at Banksy’s Dismaland in 2015, the Action Man: Battlefield Casualties films with Veterans for Peace UK, and the Hell Bus, a mock marketing suite about oil company greenwashing.

He sells cheaper objects through his own shop, from a £17 Not Piss mug to a ChatGPT Magic 8 Ball.
