Egle Jauncems is the London-based Lithuanian artist who moves between painting, weaving, printmaking and performance. She was the first winner of the David Hockney scholarship at the Royal College of Art. Here you will find our take on her work and where she has shown.
Our take on Egle Jauncems
Jauncems took an unusual route into art. She studied Chinese at Vilnius University, spent almost four years in East Asia and performed in Vilnius’s alternative music scene before art school, according to Vartai Gallery.
In 2015 she became the first recipient of the David Hockney Foundation scholarship for the Royal College of Art MA, and visited Hockney’s Los Angeles studio. “When I saw David in his studio I was speechless,” she told Artlyst.
Her 2021 show Patterns in Lithuania drew on Paulinas Kaluina, a sacristan and shoemaker who designed more than 200 weaving patterns but never wove them.
