Elizabeth Power is the St Leonards-on-Sea artist behind bright, loose paintings of seaside scenes, flowers and still lifes. Here you will find our take on her work, where to see Elizabeth Power now, how to buy one of her paintings, and her small acrylic in this year’s War Child auction.

Our take on Elizabeth Power

Power paints the south coast the way she would like it to look. Terraces, deckchairs, jugs of flowers and palm trees all arrive in coral pinks, deep blues and acid yellows. Colour comes first for her. “I love vibrant colours; I am a colourist. Colour is my priority, and my painting subject is secondary,” she told RyeZine.

Her War Child piece, The Wind Changed, is a small still life in acrylic. A white jug with a red blotch and a red-and-white striped handle holds a loose bunch of yellow, pink and white flowers. Beside it stands an empty wine glass. The table is a peach cloth with thick navy stripes, set against a pale green wall and a band of teal.

That loose finish is deliberate. She trained in fashion illustration, where you may have seconds to catch a model on the catwalk, and she still sketches fast. “I’m drawn to things looking free and loose and not necessarily a hundred per cent finished,” she told RyeZine. So the small panel is a fair sample of what she does on bigger canvases.
