Fergus Greer is the London photographer who made the studio portraits of Leigh Bowery’s costumes, or “Looks”, from 1988 to 1994. Here you will find our take on his work, where it has been shown, the Leigh Bowery prints and books you can buy, and recent auction results.

Our take on Fergus Greer

Greer saw Bowery perform at Anthony d’Offay Gallery in 1988, and they worked together for six years, until Bowery’s death in 1994. “Nothing could have prepared me for the excitement I felt when I saw Bowery perform for the first time,” he says, as quoted by Michael Hoppen Gallery.

The photographs matter because the costumes did not last. “Leigh used to rip up and re-make his costumes,” Greer told Tate, “so photography was really key to preserving his looks.” His portraits were central to Tate Modern’s 2025 Bowery show.

Tate’s 2025 Fergus Greer edition, at £320, has no numbers left to buy, and the same print is on the resale market at four times that. His Tate postcard book, at £16, is the cheapest way to own the pictures.
