Georgie Huxley is the young London artist and Slade graduate who paints quiet, overlooked moments, lately from her mother’s family photographs. Here you will find our take on her work, where to see Georgie Huxley now, how to buy one of her small oils, and her painting in this year’s War Child auction.

Our take on Georgie Huxley

Huxley paints everyday scenes that most people would pass over. Her current work comes from her mother’s family archive, so she paints photographs from before she was born. AOAP Projects, which sells her small oils, describes how she looks for “the pause before something happens, the scene that holds its breath” on its shop page.

Her War Child piece carries the longest title in the sale: It Was Written That I Would Love You, From the Moment I Opened My Eyes. It is a small oil on wood, set at what looks like a family party. A little girl in glasses and a pale blue sundress stands beside a man in high-waisted jeans and a white T-shirt. His head is hidden behind the golden bell of a brass instrument, and a microphone stand cuts in from the left.

The cropping is the clever part. By hiding the man’s face, she makes the child the only person you can read, which suits a series about knowing a parent’s life only second hand. She graduated from the Slade in 2023, so this is an early chance to buy into a painter at the start of her career.
